Joseph Linwood Taylor

Joseph L. Taylor went to be with the Lord on April 2, 2012. He was born December 30, 1928. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and John Taylor, a sister, Beatrice(Beanie) Lewis and two brothers, Willie and George(Fruitcake) Taylor. In March of 1962, he was the first black driver to be offered a position as a bus operator with Virginia Transit Company, now GRTC. He retired from GRTC in March 1989 after 27 years driving buses throughout the city. Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years; Gloria C. Taylor; one daughter, Rosalynn T. Lucas, son-in-law, Jerry A. Lucas; three grandchildren, Mara LaVerne, Mya Camille, and Allen Christopher Lucas; sister-in-law Doris W. Carter, brother-in-law George Lewis; several nieces and nephews among them, Derek Carter(Karen) and Gedell Gresham; devoted first cousins/siblings Laura Kemp, Bernice Duncan, Jerome(Martha) and Harry(Denise) Duncan; other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Avenue. Homegoing services will be held Monday April 9, 2012 at 11:00AM at the Fifth Baptist Church, 1415 W. Cary Street where remains will lie in state one hour prior to funeral time. Rev. Earl Brown(pastor) off. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Family and friends assemble at the church 10:45AM Monday.
