Peacefully entered into eternal rest on May 29, 2012. Major Laurel Miller of Richmond. He retired from the Richmond City Police Department in 1997 after providing 36 years of dedicated service. He was the first African American in the history of the Richmond City Police Department to be promoted to Traffic Sergeant, Uniform Lieutenant, Division Head, Captain and Major. In 1978, Laurel also became the first African American Deputy Chief in the Richmond City Police Department. He is survived by his wife, Betty Miller; two daughters, Yasmin Miller Lettington and Nicole Miller; one sister, Viola Bowie; two brothers, Joseph and Floyd Miller; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; four sisters-in-law; Gerlienda Loggins Moses, Marian Loggins Ridley; and Charlotte & Theodora Miller, and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Avenue where the family will receive friends from 3 to 5PM on Sunday. Funeral services will be held Monday 12 noon at First African Baptist Church, 2700 Hanes Avenue where remains will lie in state one hour prior to funeral time. Dr. Rodney D. Waller(pastor) off. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Family and friends assemble at the church 11:45AM Monday.
