Eleanor Dorothy Tucker entered into eternal rest on April 19th 2014. A native of Orange, New Jersey, she was born to the late Andrew and Velma G. Tucker on April 27, 1918. She was the second of four children. Eleanor began her education at Washington Park Elementary School, Richmond and Virginia Randolph High School in Glen Allen, VA. She was a caring and quiet person who obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree. She went on to Teachers College Columbia University in New York City and earned a Masters Degree before she launched her career as a reading consultant after graduating from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Eleanor had a successful teaching career. She taught for forty seven years. She first taught in a one room school in Prince Edward County in Farmville, VA. She also taught in Hadensville, Newport News and other rural schools in Virginia. She later taught at Marvis College in Sumter, South Carolina before moving to the Deep South to Rust College and Mississippi College both in Holly Springs, MS. Eleanor also completed post graduate work at University of Delaware and became the first secondary teacher of mental retarded students on the secondary level in Dover, Delaware. Eleanor has been an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, an honorary member teacher society, a devoted member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and Past Matron of Electra Chapter of Eastern Star in Dover, Delaware. She retired in 1985 from Dover High School as a Special Education and Reading Teacher. She was an active member of Mt. Zion AME Church for 25 years where she participated in the Nancy C. Perry Missionary Society, the Tutorial and Mentoring Program. She leaves to cherish her memories two cousins, Mrs. Elizabeth T. Bebbs and Mr. Ernest Tucker and family; one niece, Mrs. Courtney White and husband, Mr. Ken Brown; Retirees of Dover and the Silver Saints Senior Ministry of St. John Baptist Church and a host of friends including Attorney Jerome Comer, Lynne Schaefer, GiGi Hopkins, Mrs. Regina Byers and Mr. Rod Byers. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home 2011 Grayland Avenue. Funeral services will be held 11:00AM Thursday at St. John’s Baptist Church 4317 North Avenue. Dr. Michael L. Felton(pastor) off. Interment Roselawn Memory Gardens, Glen Allen. Family and friends assemble at the church 10:45AM Thursday.
