Marie Allen

Peacefully crossed over to be with the Lord May 31, 2015. Mrs Marie M. “Gran” Allen, age 91, of Richmond. In 1942, Mrs. Allen was in the first graduation class of Maggie L. Walker High School. In 1957, she graduated with the first African American LPN program from MCV through the Richmond Technical Center. She went on to become the first black LPN charge nurse in Retreat Hospital. To add to her many accomplishments, she went on to become an entrepreneur in the Private Nursing Care business and she managed to single handedly send all her children to college. She is preceded in death by one daughter, Edith Plymouth; three sons; Robert A. Allen Jr., Gilbert A. Allen Sr. and Ronald G. Allen Sr. She is survived by one daughter, Robyn Allen; 16 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; 13 great great grandchildren; a host of nieces, among them a devoted Gloria Randolph; nephews and cousins; sisters and brothers-in-law and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Avenue where memorial services will be held Friday at 11AM. Apostle Athinia Hunt off.
