Sallie Washington Squire, 62, of Richmond, VA, and formerly of Harrisonburg, VA passed away Monday, December 6, 2010 in Richmond.
Ms. Squire was born April 4, 1948 in Harrisonburg, and was a daughter of the late Gratehouse Robert Washington and Hattie Mazure Turner Washington.
She graduated from Harrisonburg High School, where she was one of the first African Americans to be inducted into the National Honor Society. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Virginia State University. She taught English and was a retired library media specialist from Richmond Public Schools.
Ms. Squire was a member of Broad Rock Baptist Church.
She is survived by, one son, Ivan Squire; a daughter-in-law Jennifer Squire; three granddaughters; Isabella, Katie and Julianna Squire; four sisters; Bernice Temple, Mary Ann Martin, Dr. Shirley Washington and Gloria Clarke; one brother, James Washington; one sister-in-law, Mary Washington; four brothers-in-law, Alfred Hoggard, Theodore Temple, Arnold Martin and Kenneth Clarke; a former spouse Sidney Squire; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Washington, and two sisters, Margaret Hoggard and Lorraine Washington.
Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Avenue where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30PM on Thursday.
The Rev. Kevin Cook will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Friday at Broad Rock Baptist Church, 5106 Walmsley Blvd., Richmond.
Interment will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Richmond.
