Dorothy Louise Yates

GOD fearing…devout Christian…compassionate…loving…kind…patient…gentle…wife…mother…grandmother…

In the early morning hours on November 19, 2023, the Angels came down and gave Dorothy Louise Yates affectionately known as “Dot” her robe, crown, and wings.  Dorothy, who recently celebrated her 98^th birthday, was born on September 9, 1925, to the late Sylvia and Junius Thornton. Dorothy was married to the late Carlton Osborne Yates, Sr. and this union produced four children: Jewell Harris, Carlton Osborne Yates, Jr., Judy Brunson, and Carl Yates. She was the grandmother to seven grandchildren: Dawn Cherry, Nichelle Breedlove, Timothy Brunson, Katrina Yates, Lamonte Yates, D’Jaris Yates, and Shelly Smith and the great-grandmother to a host of grandchildren.  Dorothy also leaves behind three siblings: Sylvia Pulliam, Elouis Thornton, and Veola Bey.  Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton Osborne Yates, Sr., and son, Carl Yates.  

Dorothy accepted Jesus Christ and became an active, lifelong member and deaconess at Second Baptist Church on Idlewood Avenue.  She did not take her calling lightly, Dorothy knew the Bible inside and out.  She was a prayer warrior, and faithful tither who visited the sick and shut-in with the intent to encourage, inspire and remind them of the goodness of God. Dorothy was a friend to everyone and will be missed immensely.  We would like to extend a special thank you to her hospice nurse-Shante Pittman, and caregivers-Shannon Webb and MeShall Petty. The Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, November 27, 2023, at 1:30pm at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Avenue, Richmond, VA 23220. The family will assemble at Maury Street Cemetery immediately following the services.  To honor her request, there will not be a viewing or repast service.  May God Bless Each and Every one of You!
