Elwood Jackson, Sr., (98) passed away on July 2, 2022, at Glen Burnie Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Henrico, V.A. He was born on January 30, 1924, in Albermarle, V.A. to John and Mattie (Johnson) Jackson.
Elwood grew up in Crozet, VA. He graduated from Jackson P. Burley High School in Charlottesville, VA in 1952.
Additionally, he:
- joined the Army in 1942, and served for 6 years. As a T5 (Tech Corporal), he was honorably discharged in 1949 after serving in World War II. Consequently, as a result of his being the great soldier and man that he was, he was awarded 5 Battle Stars for his service.
- attended Virginia State University for 2 years.
- was employed with the U.S. Government at the McGuire VA Medical Center for 36 years.
Elwood married Estelle Mayo in 1950, in Charlottesville, VA. A union that lasted 46 years and produced a multitude of love. Elwood is survived by his children: Vernoise F. (Carolyn) of Lexington, V.A., Cynthia E., Eric U., Sr. of Richmond, VA., Elwood, Jr./Jack (Linda) of Newport News, VA, Susie M./Marietha (Van) of St. Charles, MO, and Donald G. of Richmond, VA.; his 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; and his beloved nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Elwood was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Estelle Mayo (1996); his grandson; Eric Jr.; 2 great-grandsons, Isaac and Xavier; his parents, John and Mattie Jackson; and his siblings: John, Jr., Edith, Mary, and Martha.
A Homegoing service will be held at Fifth Baptist Church, 1415 W. Cary Street, Richmond, V.A. at 11:00 a.am. on Saturday, July 16, 2022. Viewing will be held at Jenkins Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave., Richmond, VA 23220 all-day Friday, July 15. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Pilots Lane, Richmond, VA 23222.
Please wear appropriate attire: Men - shirt and tie and women - appropriate dress attire.
