Sallie Simmons Walker, 85, daughter of the late Willie P. and Bettina Hawkins Simmons was born June 30, 1934 in Baskerville, VA and departed this life peacefully on Tuesday, June 16, 2020. She was united in marriage to Charles M. Walker in Morristown, New Jersey in 1956. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Sharon Baptist Church in South Hill, VA. She later joined 3rd Baptist Church in Toledo, OH and shared her gifts in the choir and other ministries until her move back to Richmond, Virginia in 2015. Sallie attended Thyne Institute in Chase City, VA and later completed her education in Morristown, New Jersey. Sallie had the benefit of a very rewarding professional career as a special needs assistant for children, early childhood teacher aide, and a nutritional counselor working with single mothers and previously incarcerated men and women. She also enjoyed running daily, traveling and fashion. Her kind, quiet and helpful demeanor was very evident in all her relationships with family and friends. Sallie’s spiritual faith, trust in God and love of gospel music helped her navigate life’s many challenges. She will be dearly missed by her three children, Carolyn S. Graham, Daryl Walker (Jim Bracken), and Eric Walker; two grandchildren, Keith Gregory (Helena) of Chesapeake, VA; and Jennifer Scott (Lamounte) of Colorado Springs, CO; three great grandchildren, Shawn Jr.; Keidra and Gianni. Preceded in death are her siblings, Annie B. Davis, Sterling Simmons, Sr., Lillie Andrews, Chester Simmons, John W. Simmons, Roberta Gaskins, Lucy S. Bugg and Dorothy S. Hardy. She also leaves to cherish her memory her remaining living siblings, Ruben Simmons, of Baskerville, VA; George Simmons, in Athens, VT; and Benjamin Simmons (Leta) of South Hill, VA; devoted sister-in-laws, Maria Simmons and Rosa L. Simmons, both of South Hill, VA. She will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, especially devoted niece in-love, Louise Simmons. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, June 20 at 3:30 pm at Joseph Jenkins. Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Avenue, Richmond VA. Visitation with family will be Friday, June 19 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm, and viewing will be available after 12 noon and before the funeral service.
