Richmond

Departed this life February 13, 2025, Ms. Verdell Boney, age 88, of Richmond, formerly of Washington, D.C. Ms. Boney was the second of five children born to Jack and Lucy Boney of Halifax, NC. She spent her formative years between Halifax and Richmond, and as an adult settled in Washington, D.C. where she worked for AMTRAK in Terminal Services at Union Station for nearly forty years. She was a very proud union member and highlights of her career included meeting many local Washingtonians including business leaders and politicians including former President Joseph Biden Jr. who regularly rode the train from Washington to Delaware while serving in Congress. She also appeared with several union members on Capitol Hill during a hearing and loved working in a nontraditional field focused on transporting people safely and securely along our railways and around the country. She enjoyed Politics and was an avid sports fan of the D.C. professional football and basketball franchises, Georgetown Basketball, PGA Golf events and The Olympics. She also had outstanding penmanship, loved to read books including many works of African American literature and her Washington Post newspaper daily. She was also a self-taught gourmet who loved cooking for friends and family, vacationing by cruise ship and holding conversations in her signature accent with gusto which earned her the nickname “The Female James Earl Jones”. She is survived by her daughter, Jacklyn Boney Bruce of Henrico, VA., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Ms. Boney spent the past several years in a local nursing home alongside her roommate, Ms. Mary Samsel previously of Queens, NY. Ms. Boney was predeceased by her parents and siblings. A private interment will occur at a later date.
